Practicing for the past 30 years, Prof. Dunera Ilako is a board-certified ophthalmologist and surgeon and a fellow of the College of Ophthalmology of Eastern Central and Southern Africa (COECSA). She offers a wide breadth of clinical expertise as a Comprehensive Ophthalmologist,with specific focus on cornea disease and laser refractive surgery.
Founder and Incumbent CEO at Eagle Eye Laser Centre, Prof.Ilako has overseen many changes in the practice since its inception in 2000, from a solo practice entity to a recognized Eye Care provider nationally and beyond. She is also a Senior Consulting Ophthalmologist at the Center.
Her professional attributes describe her as a highly respected ophthalmologist and caregiver who is also a passionate educator. She has trained hundreds of medical students and ophthalmology residents at The University of Nairobi over the past two decades and in her teaching role, has provided technical assistance in developing national policy documents, training manuals in ophthalmology as well as curriculum development of ophthalmology academic programme.She continues to serve at UON in the capacity of associate Professor in the department of Ophthalmology.
Prof. Ilako has extensive research experience; authoring over 30 peers reviewed ophthalmology publications as well as paper presentations. Most notably is her Research work in Trachoma studies that was cited in the Report of the 21st meeting of the WHO Alliance for Global Trachoma Elimination of Trachoma by 2020.
She has special interest in sports vision that has seen her train and appointed as an International Visual Impaired Classifier offering global services to the International Paralympic committee (IPC) and the International Blind Society (IBSA).
